Obituary of Betty Conrad
Elizabeth Susan Conrad
Betty Conrad, 1926-2019
Betty Conrad loved to laugh. The long-time resident of Frederick County had a joy of life and sense of adventure that carried her to many places before she breathed her last in Vancouver, WA, on Nov. 9, 2019.
Betty was a fountain of love who welcomed her children to bring friends home. She was fascinated by nature and wildlife, especially deer, which she called "Bambis." Betty truly loved this Earth. She helped start a recycling program at Frederick Community College, used her dishwater to grow flowers and for decades hung her laundry outside to air dry. In lieu of cards or flowers, she asked people please to donate to support native Americans and the environment.
Elizabeth Susan was the eldest daughter of Friedrich and Mamie (Maurine Spatz) Tempel and sister to Henry, Mathilda and Katherine. Born in Brooklyn Nov. 27, 1926, she moved to Cincinnati at a young age. She was popular in school and lots of friends came over to her home. After WWII, she met Bob (Robert) Conrad and fell in love. They married in Kentucky and moved to Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois and finally Unionville, MD, joining St. Peters Church congregation in Libertytown.
The couple had eight children, starting with Robert, Jr. (Robbie) and Rose (Mimi). The siblings attended St. Joseph and St. Peter’s schools and graduated at Linganore High. Ruth, Chris, Mary (Missy), Michele, Fred and Anthony all went to college at FCC. Betty got a teaching credential and was devoted to teaching at Visitation Academy. She stayed in her beloved cabin home long after the children grew up and left. Bob passed away in 1994. In 2009, Betty moved to New York to live with her daughter, Rose Taylor. She moved to Vancouver in 2015 to be closer to her children in the Northwest, where her daughter Mary Hull became her close companion.
Betty is survived by her brother, Henry Tempel, all her children, her nine grandkids, Rod, Celine, Nova, Ann Victoria, Lou, Adam, Danny, Veronica and Ivie, and five great grandchildren, Jackson, Phoenix, Juniper, Ember and Aislinn.
In Loving Memory
