Obituary of William G. Herrick

William “Bill” Herrick, a lifelong resident of Vancouver, passed away peacefully at age 92 after a short battle with cancer. He had loved ones by his side. He was born to William and Ruth Herrick on December 16, 1927 at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He graduated from Vancouver High in 1946 and was one of the last two living members of his class. He served in the Army during World War II and married his wife of forty years, Ann Gilronan, in 1951. She preceded his death in 1991. Bill is survived by his daughter, Kathy, of Beaverton, and his two sons, Dave (Debra), of Snohomish, and Tom (Ken),of Portland. He is additionally survived by his brother Gordon (Roberta), of Ridgefield and his two granddaughters. Bill began work in the Forest Products Industry in 1950 and retired from Western Transportation Company, a subsidiary of Crown Zellerbach, in 1985. Bill had a great love for the outdoors and introduced his children to a range of activities readily available to residents in the Northwest. His family spent many summers water skiing on local rivers and lakes while winters would take them to the mountains where they enjoyed downhill skiing. Bill knew the best hikes in the Gorge and the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. He remained active throughout his life, still walking and taking aerobics at the Firstenburg Center with his companion, Nellie Carslay, until cancer had its way with him. His sense of humor and sense of style remained intact until the very end. There will be no memorial service at his request. Go outside and take a walk in remembrance of Bill.
