Four months you've been gone from this earth, Jimmy. We think of you every day. We hope the memory of your courage and quiet curiosity helps us, your loved ones, through these difficult times of loss. You picked up and left so suddenly, but not after enduring/suffering so valiantly. You can, of course, never know how your influence, even in your death affects those who've loved you, and those who've never met you directly, but indirectly through the love you showed. Others might know of you, and who you were on Earth before you stopped in the earthly journey, as you are present in the memory of our hearts, just as Mother and Father, and Sylvia who will always be stuck in the time of when she was 28, but you, Jim, will have had more experiences, and you will have looked ahead to the days when you might retire. We miss you, Jim, and we miss looking forward to seeing you in person. But, there's the confidence that we will meet again, dear one.

It's now the beginning of August, and soon will be fall of this year that Jim died. I read poems that folks have written down in grief and condolence, published and entered into the internet database. So much writing, so much death. So many are born and live, until they die. And, we, the survivors, carry the memories, the sacred treasures of life that we as humans can collect, inherit, become part of. And, Jim is now one with those who've gone ahead, with our parents, sister Sylvia, and all the others. And, that's the way it is and has always been. And, we grieve as 57 years is too soon for us, and yet, it was his time. And, Jim, you didn't know that you and Sylv would be the ones that we can look to as we carry on.

Every time I see this particular photograph I can't help but smile, as if the force of memory of humor evoking his irrepressible grin, makes me forget he died. It makes me feel as if I can see that sparkle in his eye and he will bust out laughing right there.

I believe from at least ten generations ago James inherited the love of craftsmanship and interest in making things work, as Antoine des Rosiers arrived to North America with a contract for providing carpentry and rose in his community to become a well-regarded, and respected judge. Jim seemed to have worked on every project in "Uncle Jim's Book of Things to Do" (Grolier Books) as a youngster. He died suddenly with some unfinished projects, but he certainly left us, the strength of his character intact, and a the desire of his siblings to bring honor his legacy as with a beloved older sister who died 33 years ago.

Maybe someday I'll see the forest and not the tree. I'll see the reason for your departure too soon and so quickly from the earth, and me.
I hate you, Jim. I love you, Jim. One thing I learned from you is these emotions are not the sum and the end.
I've known you all my life. We share the same genes and the same childhood. Mom said I used to pass you my baby bottle through the slats in the crib.
Why wouldn't you listen to me? That's okay. You always had to find out for yourself. That was your way.
I'm glad you were and are my brother. Like Grandpa Champagne you left behind a legacy of beautiful craftwork and a strong willed daughter. I have many of those items you made all over the house now invoking good memories. And, photos too, of you and Caitlyn.
But more than memories, I have hope in your acceptance of Jesus Christ's love and your family's love as you died (not alone). I have hope that we will meet again. Much love, Terry

Jim, my brother, I will always remember how bravely you fought for life and breath against COVID pneumonia. We will continue your loving care for your daughter, Caitlyn. God rest your soul. Where you are I hope to be one day. Pray for us.

Well, Jim, you are missed. We were looking forward to those retirement years and the opportunity to spend some time together. Covid-19 took you too soon. You were not expecting that. Do any of us when we still have years left here expect death? Love you, brother.

Jim was younger of my two brothers and as I am coming to grips with his death, I pray that he is happy in God's embrace in the next life and I give thanks for the unique and dear person he was and the good that he brought into the world, especially in the family circle. I will share anecdotes in another posting but thank all those who have offered their kind condolences and prayers!
Rest in peace, dear brother! Pat (Sr Patricia Lane, FSP)

At this point it is too difficult for me to reconcile James' death with the life he so struggled to retain within every fiber of his being until the very last breath. Our families are indebted to the effort of the VA Portland and University of Oregon Health & Sciences Hospital. COVID-19 shortened James' life far too soon. May the strength of his caring nature in the grace of God, impact and help sustain his loved ones.
