Obituary of Stanley James Alvord

Stanley J. “Stan” Alvord, 76, passed away on May 13, 2023 in Vancouver, WA. Stan was born in Multnomah County, Oregon in 1946. He enjoyed growing up in Oregon City with its abundance of outdoor space & activities, including many summers spent at Wickiup Reservoir camping and water skiing with his parents, siblings, nieces and nephews. Stan enjoyed whitewater rafting, playing volleyball, and playing the drums. In 1963 Stan joined the Navy as a Yeoman, spending a year of his service time in Vietnam. Feeling compelled to continue serving his country, he re-enlisted in the Navy in 1975 during which he was stationed in Illinois, California, and Washington as well as being deployed on two West Pac cruises lasting eight months each. Stan proudly served in the Navy until his discharge in 1983. During his time in the Navy, Stan was able to pursue his love of volleyball, playing at the Nationals with the Navy volleyball team where he was named the most valuable player. It was also while serving in the Navy that Stan met the love of his life, Jan, when they were both stationed in Great Lakes, Illinois. Stan and Jan married in 1977 in Eugene, Oregon, officiated by Stan’s brother, Duane. They eventually had two daughters together. At the conclusion of Stan’s military service, the family settled in Bremerton, Washington where Stan took a job working at the Naval Shipyard where he stayed until his retirement in 2010. He was a good father to his daughters and loved camping and whitewater rafting with his family. Stan was blessed with one granddaughter. Stan will be fondly remembered as a good father, a proud Navy Veteran, and a generous man, always giving to those in need. Stan is survived by his former wife Jan, their daughters Jamay and Kim, and granddaughter Grace.
