I heard today of the passing of my friend Andy. It has been several years since I saw him off from Buffalo to pursue his dreams. He leaves me personally with many wonderful memories. A truly gifted man, Andy's time in my life made me a better person. My heartfelt condolences to the family.

The Memorial Service for Andrew was held on April 11. It was beautiful. In addition to family, old friends of Andrew's who I hadn't seen for years attended. Andrew's uncle Peter spoke, and his aunt Barb produced a slideshow of photos set to the music of Sarah McLachlan's "In the Arms of the Angel" and Ringo Starr's "Photograph." His aunt Janet also brought music--John Lennon's "Beautiful Boy"--that she said described his mother's and my feelings for Andrew. There was a reception after the service at which guests ate, talked and laughed. It was so good seeing you all. I want to thank everyone who helped with the food--aunts Pat and Janet, uncles Mark and Ed, my mother---and grandparents Bud and Barbara Kitchen for securing the restaurant. Much thanks to Rev. Greg Crispell, and aunts Sandy and Flo, and uncle Lyle and cousin Kris for helping with the service. I'm sorry if I've left anyone out. I want to thank everyone for the kind words, and for helping us through this difficult time.

The Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center of Portland, the hospital where Andrew died, has a custom of holding a quarterly memorial service for patients who passed there during the previous weeks. Andrew will be among those who are remember, and for whom prayers are said at the next memorial service, according to the Rev. Kurt Neilson, the chaplain at Good Samaritan Medical Center. The service is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, at 10 a.m. PCT. Thank you Rev. Neilson and Good Samaritan Medical Center.

Alison and Joe, I have been trying to write something for weeks. The words can't express how I feel. You are in my thoughts and prayers everyday. I wish I could be at the service, but Peter will be. Everyday I will see or hear something that reminds me of Andrew. My heart aches and the tears flow. I will love him, I will miss him forever.

to him about the issues of our time. His passion and beliefs always put a smile on my face. When he was a small child I would always tease him about the way he pronounced has name. So one last time, I love and miss you Android Smit

I think of Andrew everyday. I love all of you so much. I think of the times me and him have spent together and talking for hours on end about current events, music, books and him teaching me so many things. I always have loved hearing his opinions and insight and seeing his smile. When we were together we could always be ourselves. He seemed to never mind hearing my thoughts and opinions also. When he moved away from Buffalo, I did miss him and his visits to see me. But I knew in my heart he had to spread his wings and soar. Joe and Alison - I pray that your hearts heal and find comfort. You are both loved so very much. I feel so blessed that Andrew is my nephew and he will always be in my heart. I just want and need to let everyone here who has shared their love for Andrew, remember, though it's not talked about enough, Andrew is with Jesus, our Lord and Savior in heaven and we all will be seeing him again.

I know the pain is still hard, but I hope that the comfort of remembering good times and the love you guys all shared can at least ease it a bit. Being a parent is something I've not done, but I know that you guys provided a great example of honesty and kindness, and I know he carried that with him.
Take care of each other, and feel free to call on me if I can help in anyway...

It is clear that Andrew was beloved by all who knew him and it is sad that his life was shorter than most. But his life was full of more accomplishments than most. He seems to have always been moving forward ever mindful of his family and friends. That is a fitting epitaph and one to which we can all aspire.

I count myself and my immediate family as very fortunate that Andrew was living less than 15 miles from us and we were able to see him a lot lately. He tried to stop by at least once a week and would call if he couldn't make it, so we were never out of touch more than a few days at a time. With the recent holiday season came a lot of reminiscing and a lot of memories about relatives on both the Kitchen and Smith sides. I would like everyone to know that without fail, whether the memories were of happy times or ordinary times or more somber times, every memory made him smile and he made me smile in his retelling them. While you may have been miles apart, and years since you saw him, in his heart everyone was fresh and new and a happy memory. I am so blessed to have been with him at this time and so in addition to a happy lifetime of memories I also have that from him.I will miss him always.

I've tried many times to write something, only to find there are not enough words to express my grief. With that said, I can not even fathom what you must feel Alison and Joe. My biggest hope is that the love and support of family and friends will hold you up, and that beautiful happy memories of Andrew can begin to fill the void his loss leaves.
I will always remember his quick wit (that often went over others heads) and his wry smile. His love of learning, books, theatre and music. The way his face could light up a room. And although we didn't always agree with his decisions and choices, I will always admire his wanderlust. I will never be so brave.
With much Love always,
Barbara

Just wanted to send my love to aunt Alison and uncle Joe, I will always remember Andrew as a super smart boy that loved to learn something new. He was the cutest red head.I still remember when he shut the car door on my fingers when we were kids, I can't imagine how you feel, no patent should have to barrier their child. I'm sorry for your loss, love you both.

I don't think I've known a person in my life with a bigger heart in such a small frame. Knowing Andy since grade school, even though we fell in and out of touch over the years, it always seemed like he'd be a part of it. We could always fall right into some heady conversation about some book, song, or bit of politics like no time had passed. Please let me know of any Buffalo services planned, if possible.

He is a beautiful son, J.J. And what a loving father you have been. I can see that. I don't think we have the power to do anything in this life except love. We can't make things happen, or prevent them from happening through our own will. But love has a force all its own. It's obvious in that picture that this was a boy who was surrounded by that force. His parent's love is radiating through him in that smile.

Andrew, it's been a long long time since I've seen you. So much so it was hard to picture your face. That's weird but true. That was until I clicked on this link, then all sorts of memories rushed into my head. You look so much like the kid that I used to see a few times a year. We would all play and run around and make up games and you were a pretty big reason I had so much fun at my aunt and uncles house. I'm sorry you left so soon. I have faith that wherever you are you are happy and that's a good thing to know brotha. Rest in peace.
